Houthulst forest. Each day at 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock the Belgian bomb squad detonate its stockpile of unexploded shells.

The Lettenberg shelters near Kemmel are due to open Saturday (I think?)

The town hall at Poperinge has two cells where soldiers who were shot at dawn were imprisoned prior to execution. In the courtyard is a wooden execution post. Extremeley moving if you combine this with a visit to the new military cemetery in Poperinge which contains 17 such men. The tourist office will supply a list of the mens names.

Hope this helps

One other idea is to pay 40 euros and treat yourself to a tour of the German trenches at Bayernwald. You get to visit a couple of the mines on private property.

The 40 euros sounds expensive but it covers any size of group. (visit tourist office in Kemmel)

Hello Steve,

I can't follow when you write "pay 40 euro to visit the trenches at Bayernwald" . The entrance fee there is 1,5 euro per person... and that is a lot less than the 40 euro you mention.

As to the bomb disposal : they blow shells at 11.30 am and at 4 pm, every working day.

Greetings,

Charlotte
