I wonder if he was stationed at Wagon Loading Post?  The unit war diary for 26/10/17 reports a similar thing to his account.

As far as I know, there was no large crater in the area near the wagon loading post.

Does anyone know of any top down, birds eye view style images of the trenches around Zonnebeke in April 1915?

I think it may be unlikely but let me know if you know of any!!

In early 1915 people were still hanging over the side with their own cameras and very few of those photos survived.

There are 7 on TrenchMapper from much later in the war, at least they show craters etc
