chingu Posted 1 June , 2023 Share Posted 1 June , 2023 Hi all, I'm currently working through the war diary for 1st battalion rifle brigade, 1st july 1916, Somme. I have been able to map some of the coordinates in the diary that follow the standard system such as "K34 d.9". However, within the diary are coordinates that include "pts". For example: "Q5a20-pt87" and "The line pts. 91, 86, 62, 94, 49, 81, 05". How can these "pts" be interpreted to a map? I have used sites like tMapper, and read through instructions on understanding the grid system of ww1 maps, but I cannot find an explanation for applying the "pts" (is this short for points?) Can anyone help me understand this please? Many thanks, Ian

Assuming Sheet 57d, the 1915 maps of this area have numbered saps. In the 1916 maps they have numbered trench junctions. Click image to enlarge. TrenchMapper has 4, 1:5,000 maps and these show the trench junctions and associated numbering. I can't see points 86 and 81 but assuming I've read them from your post in order, they are: 57d.Q.5.d.9.2, Point 91 NOT FOUND, Point 86 57d.Q.17.b.6.3, Point 62 57d.Q.11.c.9.5, Point 94 57d.Q.11.a.4.0, Point 49 NOT FOUND, Point 81 57d.Q.4.d.9.6, Point
chingu Posted 2 June , 2023 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2023 Excellent! Thank you! I think you might be right with the trench points. I'm looking at the Redan Ridge area between Beaumont Hamel and Serre, so I'll see if I can find any points in the maps for that section. I'll let you know if they correspond to the War Diary "pts".
