williywonker Posted 28 May , 2023 Share Posted 28 May , 2023 (edited) I understand that the Belgian Monitor listed the names of recipients awarded the Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth during the Great War. The medal was issued to many British nursing staffs and auxiliaries. Does any member have access to the archives please to check a possible recipient? williywonker Posted 28 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 28 May , 2023 (edited) Many thanks for your help. I am researching the career of Nellie Romilly (nee Hozier) of the Manners Ambulance. She was not a trained nurse, rather an interpreter, so would not have been recognised by the Nursing version of the award. Angela Manners, who had some training, but who I don't think received her nursing certificate, did receive the nursing version according to the British Red Cross database. The other members were, Matron Thorpe; Sisters Bowie; Forbes; Water; Ffolliott, Manners and Hosier. williywonker Posted 28 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 28 May , 2023 I believe only a few of the Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth awards were gazetted (mostly to QA's). The majority were listed in the Belgian Monitor, the Belgian equivalent of the London Gazette. Mal

You seem likely to need a Belgian member - perhaps @Marilyne ?? [Sorry if I have rather dropped you in it Marilyne! :-/] M
williywonker Posted 28 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 28 May , 2023 (edited) Matlock, You've been really helpful and I am very grateful to you for responding and the time you've taken to help. I recall accessing the Monitor several years ago but, as you suggest, I probably need some help from Belgian members this time round, Mal Edited 28 May , 2023 by williywonker
KizmeRD Posted 29 May , 2023 Share Posted 29 May , 2023 I wonder whether the Germans realised that Nellie was the British First Sea Lord’s Sister-in-Law after her detention in Brussels? MB
williywonker Posted 29 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 29 May , 2023 (edited) The German authorities were well aware of her relationship to Churchill and at first certain privileges were granted to the Manners Ambulance as a result, but after its move to Mons to care for the British POW’s, the mood changed and on applying for passes to return to Brussels the entire party were arrested and imprisoned for five days before being released; their passage to England being secured by Brand Whitlock the United States’ Minister to Belgium, but not before the party were once again, subjected to a frightening ordeal; 'In Liege, they were surrounded by an armed guard with fixed bayonets and detained five hours before being taken under guard to Aix la Chapelle, where at four in the morning they were marched to a barracks and locked up again, with guards with loaded rifles and fixed bayonets. In Hamburg they were jeered at by a crowd and when they went over the Kiel Canal, the blinds in their railway carriage were drawn down, two guards got in, pointed their rifles at them, and told them that if they looked to the left or right they would be shot’. The party arrived in Newcastle via Denmark on the 3rd December 1914. On the question of the Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth, a fellow GWF member kindly PM’d me with confirmation that Miss Hozier was awarded the medal with the Red Cross suspension as confirmed in National Archive File Ref: FO 372/1110. The Greek Order of the Redeemer that is also with her group of medals is that awarded to her twin brother, Lieutenant Commander W O Hozier RN, who committed suicide in Paris in 1921. KizmeRD Posted 29 May , 2023 Share Posted 29 May , 2023 In Meredith Whitford’s book ‘Churchill’s Rebels’ (Ch.3) she writes… ‘In June 1918 the King of the Belgians wrote to Nellie Romilly telling her that she had been awarded the Médaille de la Reine Elisabeth for her 1914 work in Belgium. This letter which Nellie proudly kept in one of her scrapbooks had to be forwarded from her Pimlico address to Dieppe, and it puzzles me why a woman nearly eight months pregnant should have travelled to France in wartime conditions’. KizmeRD Posted 29 May , 2023 Share Posted 29 May , 2023 (edited) And thank you Mal for mentioning a bit about their arrest and return to the UK - that triggered me to make an internet search, and I was fortunate to find a very full account of the episode written by Nellie herself (as published in the English Review Feb 1915 vol. 19) https://archive.org/details/sim_english-review-uk_1915-02_19/page/305/mode/1up MB Edited 29 May , 2023 by KizmeRD
