Hi

Can anyone help me id the plane in this, unfortunately ,only half a photograph. I'm useless at identifying planes and having most of the tail missing doesn't help.

Many thanks for that. The man in the photo did learn to fly with 42 Training Squadron and I believe they had a Jenny ( B1934)

That was somewhat of an amateur guess. I was checking RFC aircraft and that seemed the most similar.

The black cat marking indicates an aeroplane from No 85 Canadian Training Squadron, part of the 43rd Wing, based at Leaside Camp near Toronto.  In 1918 the unit marking was changed to  a cross in a shield.

I hope this helps.

Hi

Many thanks one and all.

The man was Canadian who originally started training in Canada during November 1917.  He then came to the UK in 1918 to finish his flying skills with 63TS  & 42TS before finally joining the BEF in September 1918 as a camel pilot with 208 Squadron.

Cheers
