Blackblue Posted 18 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 18 May , 2023 Might it be Motovun?
Keith_history_buff Posted 18 May , 2023 Share Posted 18 May , 2023 It looks like "Ainotuvan", which has a Finnish feel to it. Could it be Aivatovo? The challenge is that since 1926, these Turkish origin names have been superseded. I believe the modern name is Liti, and this is near the ancient settlement of Lete. Gardenerbill Posted 19 May , 2023 Share Posted 19 May , 2023 According to 'Army Service Corps 1902 1918' by Michael Young, 619 MT Coy were 22nd Division Supply Column. in July 1917 22nd Division were in the line on the Doiran sector. You would expect 619 to be stationed close by behind the lines but I have had a look at the trench maps for the area and I haven't found a place that looks close to 'Arnotovan' or 'Aviatovo'. AFO191519 Posted 19 May , 2023 Share Posted 19 May , 2023 Hi, Couldn't it be Amatovo, perhaps misspelled (Amatovau)? The village was located on the railway line from Salonika to Doiran and had a station that was used by the Allies.
Keith_history_buff Posted 19 May , 2023 Share Posted 19 May , 2023 Yes, I think that's more likely. Googling the name of Amatovo, having its current name of Aspros since the hellenisation process of 1926, reveals a photo of French troops taken by Jacques Boyer, and a number of pertinent results.
