oscarquebec Posted 13 May , 2023 Share Posted 13 May , 2023 Would appreciate help finding more information about a relative Herbert William Coles. He is listed on the 1918 absent voters list as PO 129159 HMS Defiance. I think Defiance was a training ship. Herbert was born in 1870. I have found his service record on Ancestry showing his first ship was HMS Impregnable in 1884 and his last HMS Indus in 1908. I would appreciate help with his service between 1908 and 1918 by which time he was 48.
Tawhiri Posted 13 May , 2023 Share Posted 13 May , 2023 (edited) Have you seen his service record at the National Archives? It runs to two pages, and his service from August 1914 up to March 1919 is on the second page. Probably also found in the usual places like Ancestry or Findmypast, but you can download a copy from the National Archives for free after first registering for an account. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7130515 Edited 13 May , 2023 by Tawhiri
oscarquebec Posted 13 May , 2023 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2023 Thanks that is most helpful. I have looked at Ancestry and FMP but the info seems limited. I'll follow the link thanks again.
