Hi All,

Looking at 1st Brigade RND  war diary and in the first column they have "Place" and usually is a map square and some numbers (as attached picture)

My question which map are they using ?, all my Gallipoli maps do not have grid squares

Thanks in advance

This would appear to be the1:40,000 map "Reproduced by Survey Dept. Egypt, from a map supplied by the War Office. (683). The WFA/IWMW "Mapping the Front - Gallipoli" has specimens. The chart 'snip' below is courtesy WFA/IWM. Square 224. M is filled by the initial '2' of '224'

Chasseaud and Doyle in their "Grasping Gallipoli (p.113) state " "This was the two-sheet, one-inch map of Gallipoli which, during March, was enlarged to 40,000 and produced by the Survey of Egypt. The Royal Naval and 29th Divisions were equipped with the one-inch map just two days before leaving England."

The ANZACs and RND were issued with the squared 40,000 maps in Egypt in ear;ly April 1915.

Thus is shown in an example square elsewhere on the map. - top row =ABCDF;   2nd row = GHIJK; middle row = LMNOP;  4th row = QRSTU; VWXYZ = bottom row. with in each square are three rows of three 'dots': these are numbered sequentially 1 to 9.

On the WFA/IWM 40,000 map shown, the 'index' squares, showing lettering and dots, are 208 (bottom-right of map) and 278 (top-left of map).

As previously noted, the WFA/IWM "Gallipoli mapping 1914-1918" was (is still??) sold as a DVD.   www.westernfrontassociation.com   may help.

Hi, there are around 70 georeferenced maps and aerial photos of this area on The Western Front Association's TrenchMapper.  All free* to browse and use the opacity slider to see the modern landscape underneath.  Anyone can add a map to the Shopping Cart and purchase a high resolution copy for 4 UK pounds per map.  * members get free downloads and higher resolution map views.

To get to this particular map quickly, open TrenchMapper and right click over the map.  Select Gallipoli, then either go to Z Beach and select the map you want from the dropdown.  This can be a bit painful so a quicker way is, once you are in the Gallipoli sector, right click over the map, select Map Id Jump and paste in m_021625.  This should open the map below:

A note of cartographic caution. The allied side used a range of maps in Gallipoli, many with different and incompatible grids. Have a look at TrenchMapper and swap between maps, you can see what I mean. To be sure you have the right place with a map reference that looks right, you will need some corroboration, a trench name, place name etc.

NR72,

Hamilton's Force Order No.1 for the 25 April Landing references the War Office Map Sari Bair.

Within the Orders and Instructions for Anzac the footnotes  state that the map co-ordinates refer to the 1/40,000 Map in use at the time.

This is the map horatio 2 posted. Identifying features on this map are almost non existent so you my need to rely on the trench mapper to pin point exact positions.

However, I believe you are looking at the 400 Plateau area. Parker won his VC for his actions around Wire Gully.
