Guest Ian Polley Posted 8 April , 2005 Share Posted 8 April , 2005 I have a picture of my grandfather, Frank Polley, who served in RAMC. In the picture I have he is posing in front an ambulance with an emblem, a hanging blackbird, which I believe is the emblem of 324 coy ASC. 3rd Army. I am trying to ascertain if the foregoing info could let me know where the ambulance coy was delivering wounded personel. My grandfather went to France 15 July 1915. Unfortunately his service records were destroyed during the blitz. Any help appreciated Ian
michaeldr Posted 8 April , 2005 Share Posted 8 April , 2005 Ian, re ASC Company 324 [role: 6 Motor Ambulance Convoy (MT)] Col Michael Young’s history ‘ASC 1902-1918’ gives the relevant NA file number for this company as WO95 410 Young also has the following on Motor Ambulance Convoys in general; “If a ‘Blighty’ was involved (ie a wound which necessitated a return to the UK) train to the UK base was the main method of transport. Transport to and from the trains was an ASC task. Railways lacked, of course, the inherent flexibility of road transport and either to replace or compliment trains, a number of Motor Ambulance Convoys were formed, each one consisting of an ASC Transport Company, forty-eight in all.” Regards Michael D.R.
