he was my G Grandfather, I know that the 14th was a service battalion but am trying to find out if he served abroad with any of the other battalions.

Any ideas?

Rod,

You will need to search the medal rolls at Kew for this information. If he served overseas he will (or should) have a Medal Index Card.

The MIC can be searched online from the National Archives.

Hope this helps

Hi Anthony,

Unfortunately I do not have a service number. At the moment the only mention I can find of him is in a local Notts newspaper.

There was an article about my grandfather (his son) L/cpl Albert Fitzgibbon 13370 who was wounded at Gallipoli in August 1915 while serving with the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters. In that article it mentions my grandfather Albert, stating that he was the son of Sgt G Fitzgibbon of the 14th Bn.

I cannot seem to find any other mention of him in family records.

I will have to make a personal visit to Kew and see what I can find out, I was hoping to arm myself with as much info as possible before I made that trip.

Regards

Rod

Rod,

There are certainly MICs for Albert Fitzgibbon,

1 for Campaign Medals and 1 for either Mention in Despatches or Meritorious Service Medal.

http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchive...1&resultcount=2

but no G Fitzgibbon in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby)

The 14th Battalion was a Reserve Battalion. It is possible that Albert's father never saw overseas service?

Do you know where in the country they lived around 1900. I might be able to find a name on a census.

Steve.

Steve

Thanks for the info, that indeed was my grandfather, that is very useful.

My G Grandfather lived around the Retford/Tuxford area of Notts at the time, I recall a notification being sent to him from the War Dept regarding Alberts wounding at Gallipoli. I will find it and that should provide the whole address, I wll post the address.

Thanks for your help

Rod
