tricksor Posted 29 April , 2023 Share Posted 29 April , 2023 The Stahlhelm was introduced by 1916, but would pickelhauben still be used by front-line troops until the end of the war?
derekb Posted 29 April , 2023 Share Posted 29 April , 2023 As I understand it, Pickelhauben were worn behind the lines or rear areas very late on during the war, I am not an expert but I have seen the fact mentioned several times whilst research the pickelhauben that own, hopefully a expert will clarify. GreyC Posted 29 April , 2023 Share Posted 29 April , 2023 Derek is right. Attached a photo from my collection showing members of a MG sharp-shooter section based in Saarlouis, photo taken in February 1918. Due to a lack of leather some of the Pickelhauben were made of felt. GreyC

derekb Posted 1 May , 2023 Share Posted 1 May , 2023 I don’t know for sure, but I would bet on the wearing of Pickelhauben in the trenches would have been forbidden, apart from being irresponsible.
