Remembered Today:

The Battle of The Somme 1916

Hi All, I have come across the term 'Forbidden Zone' in the war diary of the 21st Lancers No 1 Service Squadron just prior to the Battle of The Somme 1916:

June 24th 1916 – One Sgt and 16 men took over the western patrol of the forbidden zone from today.  The duties consist of two men to go out every four hours and visit examining posts on the frontier and bring in all reports of any suspects crossing the border.  Also police duties in the town of Wateau (sic Watou) 20:00 to 22:00hrs.

Which begs the question what was the Forbidden Zone?

I surmise it was an area between the Allies and the Germans frontline ie no mans land that was policed prior to the Allies attack to prevent German reconnaissance.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

From what I've always understood, a 'forbidden zone' is an area where civilians were not permitted.
