WilliamRev Posted 12 April , 2023 Share Posted 12 April , 2023 (edited) Something that has been slightly bothering me for ages: my grandfather's entry in the July 1918 Army list (he was commissioned 30 January 1916) : (Temporary) Lt. Revels (Acting Captain 30 Aug 17) (Spec. Appt.) 30 July 1917. In early 1916 he was a staff officer (2nd Lt.) after being wounded twice, but returned to his old battalion in August 1917 as an acting captain. What does 'Special Appointment' mean please? Thanks, William Edited 12 April , 2023 by WilliamRev

WilliamRev Posted 16 April , 2023 Author Share Posted 16 April , 2023 Thanks GWF1967 for highlighting the thread - that is helpful. It does appear to refer to the fact that he had been transferred to the staff, (with a cushy job in Whitehall), and the 'Special Appointment' involved sending him back to his battalion to command a company.
