French postcard information

Hi.

I am helping a friend with a question as copied:

hello Looking for info on a soldier I have his last name, see photo, as well as his first name. In his letter he says he was sent somewhere, it seems to me, to Italy. I know it's slim as a hint, I don't know where to search at all, I can't find anything on Google. I'd like to know if he survived the war, and what he became 🤞 Thank you very much

The area she thinks he served was Italy.

Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look?

Many thanks in advance.

Tony

Welcome to the forum.  Perhaps members @yperman @Zachary Fois and @battle of loos may be able to help.

What is his name?

Card is dated 7 January 1917, Castelnuovo. The caption on the front says "Souvenir Campagnes d'Italie 1918" (a souvenir of the Italian campaigns). If he died, he might be registered on the site Mémoire des Hommes.

Good evening,

A good quality scan was needed to identify the regimental numbers on the collars.
otherwise, the n°1 & 2 carry a VAREUSE-DOLMAN model 1891, modified 1916.

Castelnuovo was on the front line of 24 October 1917 during the launch of the Caporetto offensive.

Might 7 Janvier 1917 be an error?

Should it be 1918, which would fit with the description on the front of the card?

People (well, me for example) sometimes put the date of the old year when writing a date in the early days if the new year.

Tony, what is the soldier's name? Is it Gerard Lariviere?

Do you know where in France he was born/lived? Do you have a year of birth for the man? Fingers crossed, the local archive have indexed his name, and a digitised matricule militaire can be discovered.

Six French divisions were sent to Italy at this time.

Hi. Many thanks for your reply. The name is Emille Lariviere. I will have a look at the link. Much appreciated.

The name is Emille Lariviere. I will see if I can find out some more. My apologies for the lack of information.

Thank you Michel, I agree that a better scan would really assist in identifying the unit.  It ought to be possible.

I have asked for a better scan of the postcode. Once received I will upload it. Many thanks to everyone for your valued help.

Can anyone read the signature on the card? "embrassant (?) comme je vous aime Votre fils............." It doesn't look like Emile to me, but perhaps it's a nickname, or something else altogether?

I see "Gervais"

Good eyes! In which case it seems that Emile Lariviere is not the writer of this letter, unless perhaps he is Emile dit Gervais (or vice-versa)?
