tonybiker Posted 10 April , 2023 Share Posted 10 April , 2023 (edited) Hi. I am helping a friend with a question as copied: hello Looking for info on a soldier I have his last name, see photo, as well as his first name. In his letter he says he was sent somewhere, it seems to me, to Italy. I know it's slim as a hint, I don't know where to search at all, I can't find anything on Google. I'd like to know if he survived the war, and what he became Thank you very much The area she thinks he served was Italy. Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look? Many thanks in advance. knittinganddeath Posted 10 April , 2023 Share Posted 10 April , 2023 What is his name? Card is dated 7 January 1917, Castelnuovo. The caption on the front says "Souvenir Campagnes d'Italie 1918" (a souvenir of the Italian campaigns). If he died, he might be registered on the site Mémoire des Hommes. battle of loos Posted 10 April , 2023 Share Posted 10 April , 2023 Castelnuovo was on the front line of 24 October 1917 during the launch of the Caporetto offensive.
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 10 April , 2023 Share Posted 10 April , 2023 Might 7 Janvier 1917 be an error? Should it be 1918, which would fit with the description on the front of the card? People (well, me for example) sometimes put the date of the old year when writing a date in the early days if the new year.

Tony Tony, what is the soldier's name? Is it Gerard Lariviere? Do you know where in France he was born/lived? Do you have a year of birth for the man? Fingers crossed, the local archive have indexed his name, and a digitised matricule militaire can be discovered. https://forum.pages14-18.com/viewtopic.php?t=16891 Six French divisions were sent to Italy at this time. knittinganddeath Posted 11 April , 2023 Share Posted 11 April , 2023 Can anyone read the signature on the card? "embrassant (?) comme je vous aime Votre fils............." It doesn't look like Emile to me, but perhaps it's a nickname, or something else altogether?

In which case it seems that Emile Lariviere is not the writer of this letter, unless perhaps he is Emile dit Gervais (or vice-versa)?
