trajan Posted 10 April , 2023 Share Posted 10 April , 2023 Interesting - but that first one shouldn't be here as it is not Great War period! Have you identified all the markings on these ones? Trajan
AntonEbans Posted 8 May , 2023 Share Posted 8 May , 2023 Recently came into possession of my brother's knives/bayonets and a1888 Mk 1 bayonet, but it doesn't look like the other ones that showed up on a search engine.
Dave66 Posted 8 May , 2023 Share Posted 8 May , 2023 Welcome, your bayonet is quite scarce….they were originally made with three rivets, but they changed the design to two rivets after just 12 months of production due to the grips splitting….I think production of these ran from jan 1889 to jan 1890. It’s also, as a bonus, unit marked to the Hampshire regiment (HTS on the pommel). Great piece, it’s a shame most of the markings are quite worn. Dave. trajan Posted 12 May , 2023 Share Posted 12 May , 2023 Yes, a lovely P1888 Mk 1! I have been looking for one for years with no luck as all have been too pricey for me...
Pawel Posted 25 July , 2023 Share Posted 25 July , 2023 Hello O found one whch looks as P1888 Can you help me to recognize more details about it?
trajan Posted 25 July , 2023 Share Posted 25 July , 2023 Hello and welcome to GWForum! It is indeed a P.1888 but in rather poor condition, rust(?) having eaten through one edge. Made by Sanderson of Sheffield in '2/91', so February 1891, under 'VR', Victoria Regina, good old Queen Victoria! It has been 're-issued'/'re-inspected', several times, which is why you have another series of date damps there, including one for 1900 and another for 1906. If you can clean the rust from the pommel you might found a regimental mark. Trajan
Pawel Posted 25 July , 2023 Share Posted 25 July , 2023 Hello Thanks for this info. Do you have idea what is best to use to clean this bayonet to not damage the markings
JMB1943 Posted 25 July , 2023 Share Posted 25 July , 2023 Pawel, Try fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a light oil on this bayonet. It won’t remove the heavy rust corrosion, but should remove the light colored surface rust which is still active. Please post photos to show us how it turns out. Regards, JMB
