BRIAN TALMER Posted 6 April , 2005 Share Posted 6 April , 2005 Whilst photographing headstones in Oxford at the weekend I came across two soilders who were transferred from the Oxford and Bucks into the labour corps. I was surprised to find the badge on the headstone in both cases was Oxford & Bucks. Any ideas why? Lesley
Terry Denham Posted 6 April , 2005 Share Posted 6 April , 2005 Lesley Many men were transferred to the Labour Corps at the end of the war after long service in other units. The War Office decreed that men who died after such transfers should be commemorated in the name of their previous regiment in recognition of their fighting service. Therefore CWGC inscribes their headstones with the previous regiment badge etc. The database also usually also lists the man under the previous unit with the addition of "transferred to 12345 Labour Corps" or similar. Men with Labour Corps badges on their headstone do exist and these are men who only served in the LC or, at least, spent the majority of their time in this unit. I seem to remember a thread on this subject some time ago.
