Skipman Posted 12 March , 2023 Share Posted 12 March , 2023 I'm researching T1/5082 A.S.C. Duncan McDougall Enlisted 8/9/1914, Entered Theatre 22/8/1915. I'm trying to find out which unit he may have served with. I cannot find a T1/**** service record at all who entered theatre on the same date. Would a S2/***** number who entered theatre on the same date help to narrow down a unit, For example, the service record of S2/13532 C C West survives he embarked Southampton 21/8/1915 disembarked per S.S. 'Maiden' at Havre on 22/8/1915 (same day as McDougall) and was attached to No 3 Coy Guards Train. Is it worth me pursuing any ASC numbers that entered theatre on the same date? Just someone on Ancestry getting it wrong, can you believe that. See attached. Thanks for checking. What is McCabe? I'm not sure I will ever know. I imagine those ASC men arriving on that date were at least on the same boat fromm the same destination and landing at the same place? Gardenerbill Posted 12 March , 2023 Share Posted 12 March , 2023 I'm afraid this will be a thankless task, in my experience it is almost impossible to link ASC numbers to units, but good luck I hope you succeed.

I think you're probably right. unless some clue turns up. All I have is a postcard written by him 4/3/1915 and stamped Bisley Camp B 4/3/1915 Woking " Dear Mother. We are still here for a few days but under orders to move at any time. Last weeks orders were a false alarm but we were ready in record time. I don't think we will be away this week yet so if you write by return I will be glad to hear from you. Love from Duncan. " Mike
Admin RussT Posted 12 March , 2023 Admin Share Posted 12 March , 2023 Ernest Oldfield T1/5098 joined at Aldershot on the 8th Sept 1914. But he was discharged medically unfit shortly afterwards, so hopeless for your task. But I would agree with the above, it's probably a hopeless task. rolt968 Posted 12 March , 2023 Share Posted 12 March , 2023 A very distant hope. Can you do anything with the date of arrival in theatre of war? RM

Gardenerbill Posted 13 March , 2023 Share Posted 13 March , 2023 A quick look in Mike Young's ASC book reveals over 200 HT Companies were formed between September 1914 and August 1915, Dvr McDougall could have joined any of these or he could have gone out as a replacement in a Company already in theatre. Knowing which Division arrived in France late August 1915 could potentially narrow down the search.

I suppose the one that closest fits the bill would be the 15th (Scottish) Divion which went out in July but who knows. Mike
Gardenerbill Posted 13 March , 2023 Share Posted 13 March , 2023 The four HT 15th Division Train Companies were 138, 139, 140 and 141. A trawl through their war diaries might throw up a few names and numbers.
