This is the entry for Bertie Hay, 18 King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Operations Log/Register/Ledger of 39 Casualty Clearing Station:

I would grateful if someone could decipher some of the words in the last column:

I so far I have worked out "Comp[ound] fracture R[ight] femur ?? ?? comminuted. Gas Gangrene. Pulseless. Transfused ?? Glycerine and? saline. No response. Thomas splint. ???."

Burnham was the name of the surgeon. The next column is headed "Anaesthetic". I am guessing that because of the size of the column it refers to the anaesthetic rather than the anaesthetist.

THank you in advance.

I read this as:

Internal Condyle intracapsular ??

Comp (ound) fracture R(ight) Femur involving (the) Trochanter

Comminuted   Gas gangrene Transfused

(?? Think its shorthand for specific volume (possibly one unit) transfused of ) glycerine and saline - no response Thomas Splint

Word after Right Femur is 'gt', short for 'greater'.

Thank you both!

He seems to have been the only fatal casualty in 18 KRRC while they were in Italy.
