Falloden Posted 1 March , 2023 Share Posted 1 March , 2023 Can anyone identify the 4-Stacker in the background of this picture taken at Imbros on 25 August 1915, please ? The foreground shows three RN Midshipmen, two of whom had just been awarded VC's.
KizmeRD Posted 1 March , 2023 Share Posted 1 March , 2023 My money would be on RMS/HMT Aquitania, but I’d be interested in what others might think. MB

KizmeRD Posted 1 March , 2023 Share Posted 1 March , 2023 (edited) It was stated that the photo was taken in August 1915 i.e. during the time that Aquitania (as well as Britannic and Mauretania) were acting as troopships. Aquitannia was only fully converted to a hospital ship role after her return to UK (28 September 1915). Prior to that she took out troops and brought home casualties as an ‘ambulance transport’ aka a ‘black ship’ (meaning no obligations or protection under international law). She made three round voyages to Gallipoli before changing her status and it was only at that time that she was painted white with a green stripe along the entire length of her hull and with prominent red crosses displayed.
