Remembered Today:

Women attached to YMCA

My grandmother was in France - inn Abbeville- in 1917, part of the YMCA. I’d like more info if possible on Abbeville as a centre, women working there as part of YMCA. I think at one point she was some sort of driver.

Quick question was she in the BRITISH YMCA organization or the AMERICAN? -- I am not sure how the two relate to be honest but I have access to some sources for the US side of things but not the British.

This podcast will be of interest

https://www.westernfrontassociation.com/the-latest-wwi-podcast/ep-146-the-ymca-during-ww1-kathryn-white/

I follow Kathryn but she's not updated her blog for some time (hope she's OK) but it's still active and lots of stuff if you follow the link at the top of the podcast page.

Also the British YMCA site https://www.ymca.org.uk/about/history-heritage/ymca-and-ww1

As for Abbeville for much of the war it was it was the HQ for Commonwealth lines of communication, and the location of a number of hospitals

It remained an important base throughout the war.

Can you publish her name please, she would have been entitled to war medals.

She was entitled to the British War and Victory medals. She served at Abbeville from July-December 1917.

Her home address is given as Nutford House, Nutford Place , London W1.

That is great. Thank you. Now I,m wondering where she was before Abbeville. Her brother was in the Flying Corps. Just wondering if they were ever in the same area.

I suspect that she did not go to France until July 1917.
