I stumbled across this Great War memorial plaque when visiting the Chappel and Wakes Colne Railway Museum last week. I think they were all employed by the Great Eastern Railway.

All on the Great Eastern Railway Memorial in Liverpool Street Station, London, although not all the initials recorded exactly the same.

F C Brothers

Fred Cecil Brothers, Clerk, Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office, London. Joined GER October 1911. Enlisted St Pancras 27th August 1914. Killed in action 18th May 1917, aged 20, serving with the 2/1st Battalion (Royal Fusiliers), London Regiment. Son of Frederick S. P. and Gertrude A. W. Felton (as W.R. Felton at Liverpool Street)

William Roland Felton, Clerk, Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office, London. Killed 2nd July 1918, aged 25, when his aircraft, Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2e, serial number 9989, stalled on turn and nose dived while flying over Manston. Serving with 203 T.D.S, R.A.F. W.H. Jones

William Henry Jones, Clerk, Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office, London. Joined the Great Eastern Railway on 12 January 1915. Enlisted Warley, Essex. Joined the Training Reserve on 2 February 1917. Died of Wounds 6th December 1917 serving with the 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, aged 19. Son of William and S. H. W. Knott

William Knott, Clerk, Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office, London. He had worked for the Great Eastern Railway for eleven years, before he enlisted in March 1916. It was reported that Knott died on whilst travelling on a hospital ship, that unfortunately sank after being hit by a German u-boat. The Great Eastern Railway Magazine notes that Knott was with the Bedfordshire Regiment, not the Northamptonshire Regiment as recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.Died 17th April 1917, aged 25. T.W. Madgwick

W.S.L. Maxwell (as W. Maxwell at Liverpool Street)

William Stuart Lock Maxwell, Clerk, Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office, London. Died 18th November 1917, aged 25 and serving with the 2/17th Battalion, London Regiment. Thanks Peter. that’s pretty concise. Such a waste of young men in the prime of their lives. Makes you wonder how big their department was and what impact their loss had on their colleagues that remained at work?
