Remembered Today:

Occupation "Dataller" on census

I thought this was a typo on the census but what a marvellous catch all category, never seen it before but the world wide web tells me it is mining terminology for "a worker paid by the day".

The modern day zero hours contract ?

In Germany there were Tagelöhner ("paid by day"). Usually  unskilled workers not only limited to mining, but working as farmhands, in road construction, etc.
