Guildford Cathedral: Housing threat to a memorial to Canada's fallen

The Cathedral does need the money the housing scheme would provide to fund its on going upkeep, but it appears that the funding for the purchase of some of the land  forming part of the Cathedral site was donated by Viscount Bennett of Calgary and Mickleham with the intention it became 'a memorial to the extreme sacrifice of his fellow Canadians during the First World War' with it  'hoped then that the hill would remain unsullied as a fitting memorial in memory of those brave Canadians who served in the armed forces'

Aside from this aspect, there is already considerable local opposition to any development on the Stag Hill site on which the Cathedral sits.

Good coverage here (including a link to details of Viscount Bennet): https://guildford-dragon.com/canadian-intervention-on-controversial-cathedral-housing-embarrassing-say-campaigners/
