Remembered Today:

Pre WWI records

Sorry, I know it's not strictly within topic on the board... but I've just found the details of my great uncle, Edwin Pullen (born 25/1/1889), who died going after a pigeon (presumably a messenger one...) falling from a wall in Malta. Sure enough, I found his death record (Malta, aged 23 in 1912) from the Army Returns. Now we'd all assumed up until now that he was in the war, but obviously not if it was 1912.

Does anyone know how I go about finding if there is any memorial or grave for him? Presumably his death certificate will now give me his regiment so I can apply for his army records - but would the army "commemorate" this sort of death? Obviously he doesn't appear on the CWGC records because it wasn't a war death.

You will be able to find his Army attestation papers in the National Archives (PRO) at Kew. I can't remember the exact series no, but once you know the regiment you should have no problem.

I succesfully found all the pre-war records for all my ancestors there.
