It's the remains of a cap badge of the 6th Battalion, The King's Regiment (Liverpool). It's missing the bugle horn part.   Pete.

They were better known as the Liverpool Rifles, Sharon, which was their secondary title, but dated back to their origins in 1859, before association with the King’s Regiment in the 1880s.  As well as a special badge, to maintain their individuality and identity as a rifles battalion, they also wore black buttons.

Thank you. That’s a really good amount of information and I really appreciate you taking the time to help me understand the complexity of this regiment.

I’m glad to help Sharon.  Most of the Territorial Force infantry were made up from similar auxiliary units that owed their origins to the so-called ‘Volunteer Force’ of localised citizen soldiers (known as “volunteer rifle corps”) established 1859-60, due to fears at the time of a French invasion.  In the early 1880s they were merged with the regular army’s local regiments, but retained varying degrees of their original identities. Originally each town, borough and city area each had their own units.
