i have an old english french dictionary that my grandfather used in ww1

he had written inside it gnr a. g. lockwood 81227 r.g.a.

50 (j) or could be (t0 or (f)

b.e.f.

can anyone help me to understand what this means

Hi David. Welcome to the Forum!

That would be Gunner A.G. Lockwood, Service Number 81227, Royal Garrison Artillery. Not quite sure what the last part is. In case you haven't already done so, it would be worth downloading his Medal Index Card, link.

Can you post a scan David? The numbers may be reference to which battery he was in. There will be little chance of finding which one by other means.
