Ordsall WW1 War Memorial

Just came across a newspaper article saying this memorial has been restored after being damaged in the 1970's.

But I cannot find a list of the names. It may have the name of ROWLES on it.

Can anyone tell if this name appears please,

Here are 2 pictures of the un-restored war memorial.

Does anyone have a picture of the restored one that can be rea.

Do you know the reason for it being damaged in the 70s? Just Curious.

I think it was in a central part of town and was vandalised so they decided to move it to a safer part of town and used the move to get it restored.

There are several pictures of it before it was restored but I can't find a picture showing it after it was restored or a list of the names.

Thank you for taking an interest.

First, are we talking about Ordsall in Salford? If so do you know where it was moved to? I live quite near to Ordsall and could get a photograph for you.

As far as I can tell, this is the war memorial on IWM, no ROWLES listed with the names: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/26193

War Memorials Online also have an entry for it: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/133274/

Bolton Remembers have a list of names: https://boltonremembers.org/memorial/regent-square-district-memorial-salford/

I'm sure I've seen this before, an article from 2014 in the Manchester Evening News announcing the restoration: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/regent-park-memorial-soldiers-killed-7144048

Struggling to find any recent photos though. If you search Twitter there are a few photos from the rededication ceremony in 2014.

Thanks Paul and Gardenerbill. Now I know for sure there are no ROWLES on this memorial.

I will keep looking.

Went for a short walk around Ordsall this afternoon and found the war memorial. It now resides in Regent Square where it was placed as part of the restoration in 2014.

Unfortunately the restoration doesn't seem to have involved restoring the name carvings as can be seen here, but there are 2 roll of honour panels mounted on the railings.

This is the left hand Roll of Honour Panel.

In front of the Memorial there is a V.C plaque

It reads:

Lance Sergeant

Joseph Woodall

Prince Consorts Own

Rifle Brigade

22nd April 1918

I will be posting more images on War Memorials Online shortly. If anyone would like higher resolution copies of my photographs send me a PM with your email address and I will forward them to you.

Great pictures.

I scoured the pictures looking for the name ROWLES but still not there.

He did live in the area.
