If you don't have access to the pay websites Findmypast and Ancestry/fold3, you may be interested in a new database on the free website FamilySearch titled

United Kingdom, Royal Air Force Service Records, 1912-1945 , consisting of Index records from the AIR 79 record series at The National Archives, Kew.

Note: You must be signed in to FamilySearch to view the records. FamilySearch do not advise the exact records included, so it is possible that this is only a selection of records from AIR 79.

(Images are available at FamilySearch Centres and FamilySearch Affiliate Libraries, in addition to images from the same series on Findmypast and fold3).

Which begs the question: what exactly might "Index records from the AIR 79" be?

If you mean what has been indexed for each record then here is a sample:-

I've never found a way with familysearch to get it to return all the records in a particular dataset, but as they have a partnership with FindMyPast, (amongst others). I suspect they may have imported the indexing lock, stock and barrel from there. Certainly it seems like the same errors seem to turn up on both.

Cheers,
Peter
