Given where John Smith is buried I assume HMS Ascension was/is a land based site?...................Also John Smiths' rank of Krooman..........what is that all about does anyone know............never seen it before & why is it spelt that way.............I assume it is pronouned Crewman

Will

The word 'Krooman' has been discussed before and a search might prove fruitful.

I seem to remember that these sailors came from southern/western Africa and hence the spelling of the rank.
