8055Bell Posted 2 January , 2023 Author Share Posted 2 January , 2023 Something strange! A George Geard of the same street, aged 5 weeks died on the day and William and is buried in the same plot. William already had an elder son named George, so this was probably his Grandson. Sad times in Oldham,

Pte George GEARD,15515, Royal Irish Fusiliers Pension records at WFA/Fold3 only really show a claim was made - There are no details of any award Most informative appears to be this pension ledger page Image thanks to WFA/Fold3 Died 11.3.20. There is much admin noted going to Awards and IO [Issue Office] along the way and then finally PA [Put Away] in 1921 [overleaf] There is an undated note of Refusal [the fact that it is not struck-through suggests to me this was the decision arrived at] suggesting cause of death was not considered caused or from a condition aggravated by service The adjacent note in the centre of page is only referring to the cancelling of another ledger entry made in error. The related pension cards do not indicate any award or other payment. Such a shame the main awards file has been lost, probably deliberately destroyed once its use was ended [as was their usual fate]. From these available records standing alone I would probably err towards no award being made due to no causation of death attributable to service.
