Bulgaria in The Great War (1915-1918)

They say that we should not invest emotion when working with historical facts and events. And this is right, but... But there is no way that at least one heart should not flutter at the mention of the name of Lieutenant Colonel Mazgalov.

Alone, he and his soldiers stayed to the last in their position - the Rocky Height to be fought when the war was already lost, when the national ideal was broken and when his regiment and division retreated before the onslaught of the Franco-Serbian hordes of many thousands. He stayed and fought with the last strength he had, until he found his martyrdom - burned by flamethrowers, shoulder to shoulder with his boys.

He was no different than his countrymen, no different than my great-great grandfathers, some of whom left their families to defend their homeland and never came back. Stratia was still a young man when he was burned by the fire of war. He could have been a teacher, a lawyer, a farmer, a merchant, or any other common profession, but no - he chose military honor and gave himself to a suffering Bulgaria when it needed its sons.

What distinguishes his feat from those in our modern history is the fact, the mindset - die, but with honor and for the Motherland.

And if many of us today are not willing to lay down our bones for the Freedom and Unification of the Fatherland let us at least be grateful and remember and promote the work of our forefathers who went, fought and died for us to exist. Because today the memory of Stratia Mazgalov is spread only on social networks and nowhere else. It is right that as citizens of our homeland we should pay more respect and name at least one small street after him. And if we think that nothing depends on us, we should remember that we should try drop by drop to restore what was taken away from us. As one of the worthiest women in Bulgarian history said, "Perseverance makes the strength, and strength makes unity." And while we wait for this slow but possible process to become a reality, let us go to church one Sunday, light a candle and pray for the souls of our heroes.
