Kath Posted 24 December , 2022 Share Posted 24 December , 2022 Surprising he's glad to be back! Is he a guard? Henry Archibald RENECLE, shopkeeper of Croydon in 1911, to his friends Mr.& Mrs. Wilson in London, posted Southend on Sea, 22 Dec.1914.

Admin Bob Davies Posted 25 December , 2022 Admin Share Posted 25 December , 2022 Happy Christmas to all! Some great pictures here, thanks for sharing them. The only one I have was sent from my Grandfather to his Mother telling her of his return to England after he was wounded in early March 1917. Postmarked April, the words 'On Active Service' printed under the post stamp. I guess it was the only card he had got to hand at the time.

Allan1892 Posted 28 December , 2022 Share Posted 28 December , 2022 My maternal grandfather (James W Wood) was in 'C' Company of the 2/1 Northern Cyclist Battalion before his transfer to the Somerset Light Infantry and the front line. His officer from 'C' Company was Alister Hardy (known by all as 'Mac' and in later life Sir Alister Hardy, Professor of Marine Biology). Every year, starting in 1919, Alister Hardy returned to Northumberland to arrange and pay for a reunion for the surviving members of 'C' Company. Every year, he would draw a simple Christmas card to send to 'his men' -- my grandfather kept many which are now in my possession and I have attached two images, the first is for 1969 to celebrate the 50th re-union and the second image is for 1971, the last re-union my grandfather attended before his death the following year. The 1971 image shows the surviving men of 'C' Company - Alister Hardy is sitting in the middle of the front row and my grandfather is sitting on the end seat, right side as you look. The only other man that I can name is Robert 'Bob' Cowan who is sitting next to Alister Hardy, left as you look at the image.
