Frank Mawdesley Hawthorn, the son of John & Everlyn Mary (Bostock) Hawthorn, was born on 13 October 1898, at Tunstall Court, Staffordshire; his parents were

natives of Burslem, Staffordshire.  In 1911, the family was living in Tunstall Court but the wartime address was in Wolstanton, Staffs.  Hawthorn was a 2nd Lieutenant

with the North Staffordshire Regiment prior to his service with the R.F.C. and R.A.F.  Placed on the Unemployed List in 1919, he died at Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland,

on 21 June 1973.  His second forename has a variety of spellings in official documents and Gazette notifications, but "Mawdesley" is confirmed by his birth and death

registrations and his service records (Air 76 RAF Officer's Service Record and WO 339 Army Officer's Service Record, at the National Archives, Kew.  That is an impressive

display of medals and memorabilia.

Very interesting, I have a 1914/15 Trio to his older brother Stephen John Hawthorn. He originally served with the 5th Btn North Staffordshire Regiment but later was transferred to serve as a Kite Balloon Officer with the Royal Flying Corps. Stephen was wounded on 15th September 1918 when his balloon was shot down by the German "Balloon Buster" Vzfw Hans Nulle of Jasta 39. Stephen's balloon was one of 4 shot down by Nulle in the space of 4 mins. Stephen was wounded when he parachuted from the burning balloon but was unfortunate enough to land badly in a trench.
