Hi All,

I know there are experts on here who can decipher backwards when a soldier may have joined the Army, so anyone care to work out Charles Gardiner’s joining date?

That number is, I believe, actually 3/8669.(edit, I mean 8869)

Near number 3/8862 attested 12/9/14.

Hopefully Craig's gratcalc comes up with same?

Looking at a few more near nos, they fall between 2/9 and 12/9/14.

Note they are all old soldiers time expired who have attested under this (source Findmypast)

3/8872 attested 7/9/14.

Many of these men were immediately promoted Sergeant Major or similar.

I suspect you will find he previously served in the Northumberland Fusiliers as a Regular under no 4752. That man's service record is available on FindmyPast.

From South London with wife Eliza Louise, which matches Effects register.

And prior to that his milita attestation to 4th East Surreys under no 8404 and is available again on FindmyPast.

Birth c 1876/7

They will be hidden in Fold3 and with Ancestry's appalling transcription/lack of validation they've created a new unit, the Northamptonshire Fusiliers.
