emam Posted 6 December , 2022 Share Posted 6 December , 2022 Hi, does anyone know where the deaths for those killed on H.M,S. Vanguard are registered? Is it the GRO?
Keith_history_buff Posted 6 December , 2022 Share Posted 6 December , 2022 Hi, you should be able to play around with the search facility on the CWGC and source a list of all those who died when she exploded in 1917. There is a link on the wikipedia article for the ship to A casualty roster by name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vanguard_(1909)
emam Posted 6 December , 2022 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2022 Thanks but I'm looking to find out about a death certificate. I know soldiers overseas have one.
Keith_history_buff Posted 6 December , 2022 Share Posted 6 December , 2022 The GRO covers England and Wales, whereas the ship was in neither of those locations when she blew up.
emam Posted 6 December , 2022 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2022 He was born in England though, you would think a death would still have to be registered. . Scotland only seems to cover those that lived there. Looks like I'm out of luck. Thank you for replying.
Keith_history_buff Posted 6 December , 2022 Share Posted 6 December , 2022 Seven years ago I ordered a death certificate for a London-born sailor who died in a hospital in Stranraer of pneumonia in 1918. Perhaps someone with a better understanding of the Scottish system of registering deaths can comment further.
emam Posted 6 December , 2022 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2022 I think I have found it. It's funny you can search and find nothing, then as soon as you ask someone you find what you wanted. I will have to wait until tomorrow when a friend will look it up on FMP. emam Posted 7 December , 2022 Author Share Posted 7 December , 2022 @Keith_history_buffmy friend got me the document. It's the GRO registers for naval deaths. I doubt that the death certificate will say anymore, I have had a couple before from France. It's really just the reference I wanted in case anyone in the future wants it. Thanks again. Keith_history_buff Posted 9 December , 2022 Share Posted 9 December , 2022 I've never seen one of these indexes before, thanks for sharing. I did order a soldier's death certificate from Scotland's people once, but it was not particularly enlightening, and I think I threw it in the bin.
