Pension ineligibilty, grounds "A"?

Hi,

Looking at the Pensions ledger and cards for a wartime soldier.  He seems to have got a 6-month pension in 1919 and then his case was closed.  After he died (at the Royal Surrey Military Hospital) in 1922 his widow also asked for a pension, but was deemed "Ineligible, grounds "A".

What was (or were) grounds "A" in this context, please?

Craig,

He was 423831 Pte. James DAVIS, 2/10th London Regiment,  The medal roll states that he entered France/Flanders 19.10.1917 and left on 3.5.1918.  Family legend states he was wounded in the right thigh in the Trenches, and though his "war employment" with the regiment ended 9.4.1919 (source: discharge paper) he underwent a series of operations as a result, dying on 14.7.1922 after the final one in the Richmond Military Hospital, Surrey, aged 23.   He seems from his own Pension card to have been given a weekly pension for just 6 months in 1919, and it was noted that his file was destroyed in October 1920.

He had married in 1920, and had a son.  His widow Elizabeth applied for a widow's pension and her card is dated 11.1.1923 (the child was not mentioned); but as mentioned earlier, the Ledger states "Ineligible", decision 7.2.23, Grounds "A".   I can't see a Service or WO364 pension file for him.

Hope that helps,

Clive

File Destroyed October 1930 [but still doesn't help us!]

A widow's pension was not claimable as a right and for granting a recipient had to be worthy in the first place.

I believe that the pension for a widow, of a soldier who married her after his wounding/disease/disability and discharge, was likely restricted in eligibility under such circumstances.

Aside: Letter codes on Pension Ledgers have been the subject of recent on-going discussions with Craig - back in the day they would have been oh so clear to the clerks - hopefully we will be able to find a key to them, preferrably sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the correction Matlock, I blame old age...

Your other remarks are also useful, even if there isn't a specific "reason" currently available.

Cheers,

Clive
