Remembered Today:

A couple of bugles

A couple of recent finds... The first bugle is a bugle made by A TURTLE of 86 London Road, Manchester. Agnes Turtle took over the family business from her (late?) husband in 1903, and continued to run it until her son took over in 1911. Aside from the address, the bugle is unmarked, but the infantry bugle cord has been attached to the instrument for an awful long time. Now I know the advice given is that if it doesn't have the WD stamp and crow's foot, it isn't a military instrument. But it's also fair to say that quite a few of the service battalions had to purchase their own musical instruments.

The second instrument - a cornet - was made by Hawkes & Son, and the serial number places the date of manufacture as before 1913. Again there is no WD stamp or crows foot, but the instrument is engraved to: 4th (RES) BATT K.S.L.I.

Cheers,

           Steve
