2635 Private Alfred John EVANS

"A" Coy

The London Regiment (Territorial Force) 2/3rd (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers)

who died 28th November 1915 and is buried HILL 10 CEMETERY, Gallipoli, Turkey

From Ray Westlake's 'British Regiments at Gallipoli'

'During the great thunderstorm (26th November 1915) … the men were at first amused to see No Man's Land turned into a lake. The water, however, quickly rose and flooded the trenches … “standing on the firestep the men were quickly up to their waists in water.” Many suffered as a result of the blizzard that followed – 50 drowned or died of exposure, over 300 evacuated with frost bite. An effective strength of 6 officers, 50 other ranks remained.' [A week previously the strength had been 429 all ranks]
