Thought i would post some photos  of Lieut Durham”s items in my collection, he had an interesting military career, Navy, Army then RFC / RAF
he was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915

the small ‘Boots’ pocket book contains notes on his time at Gallipoli, the writing is in pencil and tiny, so very hard to read, he was in the Hawke Battalion, then transfured to the 12th Northumberland Fusiliers and was attached to the Royal Flying Corps 7 Squadron as an Observer. Army book 136 records his service flying in France, Army book 425 records his pilot training.
in 1918 he was selected for Pilot training but never gained his wings before the wars ens.

i will post scans of his operational log book next week.

Durham is central in the group photo, note the Fusiliers cap badge.

Joseph Durham was born in 1894 and lived in Whitley Bay , son of R Durham .Educated Newcastle Grammar School.

Where was his WW2 service?

Please correct the title of this thread.

His birth date according to his RAF casualty card was 24 December 1893, although other sources state 24 December 1894 which is consistent with his birth registration in the first quarter of 1895. Interestingly his RAF casualty card also has him as John Ostens Durham, rather than Joseph, which seems to arise from some confusion about his full name, which according to his AIR 76 record was Joseph Ostens John Durham.

As for his WW2 service, he appears to have rejoined the RAF on the commencement of hostilities in September 1939 as a Pilot Officer before subsequently being promoted to Squadron Commander later in the war.
