Sgt Stripes Posted 18 November , 2022 Share Posted 18 November , 2022 Researching John Moore. He first served WW1 as a Pte 13332 9th East Lancs Reg discharged medically unfit November 1917 Malaria but joined the RAF in September 1918 being posted to 58 Squadron. Was this Squadron based in the UK or overseas as I can not find the relative information on his service sheet.
busterfield Posted 18 November , 2022 Share Posted 18 November , 2022 (edited) May help. Using "58 squadron in the search at the top of the page gives a few postings. Also free download at National Archives from about page 10. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8452148 Edited 18 November , 2022 by busterfield
Frank_East Posted 18 November , 2022 Share Posted 18 November , 2022 No 58 Squadron was formed on 16 June 1916 and engaged on training duties at Cramlington from elements of No 36 Squadron The squadron used a variety of aircraft until they received the FE2b at Dover in December 1917. A month later the squadron was posted to St Omer and spent the next 8 months at a number of RAF stations in the area of Northern France. On 31 August 1918 the squadron arrived at Alquines still equipped with their FE2b aircraft but was destined to be a part of the RAF heavy bomber force in France. Equipped with the new HP O/400 aircraft from September 1918, the squadron was posted to Provin in late October and remained here until 12 April 1919 when it left for Egypt via Marseilles. On 2 May 1919, the squadron left for Heliopolis being the first squadron to receive the Vickers Vimy bomber in July 1919 as a replacement for the HP O/400. The squadron was disbanded at Heliopolis on 1 February 1920. (However, the squadron was renumbered as No 70 Squadron and was based in the Middle East until 1946 when it was disbanded.) In the early 1920s there was a review of RAF strength and from this review, No 58 Squadron was reformed as a heavy bomber squadron, equipped with the Vimy at Worthy Down in 1924. As a member of No 58 Squadron, John Moore would have served in France. Any further service with the squadron in Egypt and Greece should be ascertained from his service record....name and RAF number should be sufficient to reveal his service record from RAF Records.
