Tracey S Are you researching a soldier who served in the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment ? Or as you have previously contacted the Green Howards museum are you researching a soldier who served with the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Alexander Princess of Wales's Own) The Green Howards ? they are of course two different regiments! may I suggest you look at the Long Long Trail above on how to research a soldier When posting on the forum please give as much information as you can regarding your post if researching a particular soldier a name and service number date of death and any other information you have regarding the soldier or the unit he served with, may assist the forum members to answer your query Ray

RaySearching Posted 14 November , 2022 Share Posted 14 November , 2022 (edited) Edward served with the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Alexander Princess of Wales's Own) also known as the Green Howards and not the West Yorks a title of the thread may I suggest you you amend the title of the thread, or ask a Mod to do so on your behalf from the link above posted by Busterfield A photo of his grave marker on Gallipoli and info on the 6th Bn Yorks can be found on this website The Yorkshire Regiment, WW1 Remembrance (ww1-yorkshires.org.uk) The war diary for the 6th Bn Yorks at Gallipoli has not been digitalised and is not available to download from the National Archives but is available to view on Ancestry Ray Edited 14 November , 2022 by RaySearching

RaySearching Posted 14 November , 2022 Share Posted 14 November , 2022 It appears that Edward was killed by a sniper according to the 6th Bn war diary entry for 14th Nov 1915 Ray
michaeldr Posted 15 November , 2022 Share Posted 15 November , 2022 The diary entry for 3rd Nov 1915 (18:00 hrs) gives the area in which they were operating at this time:- “Moved into fire trenches R. Sub-Section, L. flank, including 'Green Lane' & supplied garrison at 'Green Knoll'” Below are some maps and a sketch to give you some idea of this part of the Suvla battlefield. They were on the ridge Kiretch Tepe Sirt which you will see in square 135 on the first map The sketch is included to illustrate the topography only (NOT the trench lines at November 1915) and we are talking about the ground from the top of the ridge down toward the sea – Left Flank. Of the Left Flank trenches, the 6th Yorks were in the Right Sub-Section i.e. the half up to the top of the ridge. Jephson's Post was on the crest of the ridge. Specifically, as per the War Diary entry quoted above, they had the trenches seen on the map below, immediately above Jephson's Post, including Green Knoll which is seen off to the right and Green Lane (seen diagonally next to the word LEFT) which connects the main trench line to Green Knoll. Howard Posted 25 November , 2022 Share Posted 25 November , 2022 Have a look at TrenchMapper for maps showing Kiretch Tepe Sirt. Open it up, Right Click and choose Gallipoli. Pan to Suvla bay area, Right Click and choose Centre Map here then Maps at Centre. In the map list lower left there some had drawn maps- they are at the bottom of the list because they have no scale marked. An example can be seen directly, Right Click, choose Map ID Jump and use id md_022248-11 Some of these have unit positions, HQs etc. Howard
