Pte William Vardy 16028 was in the 11th Battalion Notts and Derby and Died of Wounds on 2/10/1916.

Are there any Notts and Derby experts out there who can glean any information about William Vardy from his service number or be able to advise what action he was involved with on or before 2/10/1916.

Is anyone aware of a Battalion History for the 11th Notts and Derby?

Very grateful for any replies

Regards

Woody

The 11 Bn attacked Flers Trench and Flers Support near Le Sars on 1st October and were relieved on the evening of 2nd October. This successful operation cost 169 casualties. Maybe your man was one of these?

Dave.

Woody,

My Great Grandfather (left) was CSM in D Company of the 11th.

There is a history of the battalion but it is very rare and very expensive, around £250 i think. I am after one myself.

It is called ''The Men from the Greenwood''. Someone has scanned the whole of the book and a quick search of google will find it for you.

Regards

Pte William Vardy 16028 is not mentioned in the War Diary for the battalion between 21/07/16 and his date of death. I haven't yet recorded the names from the war diary before this date. But Pte Vardy will have served in the battalion at the same time as my grandfather. Let me know if you need specific extracts from the War Diary.

The Men from the Greenwood has been scanned and is on line as scanned pages atMen from the Greenwood
