Neil Mackenzie Posted 30 March , 2005 Share Posted 30 March , 2005 Apologies if this has come up before but I understand that any E111 forms issued before August 2004 were no longer valid after December 2004 (certainly for UK residents - not sure about other EU countries). You have to get a couple of new forms from the Post Office and as well as being valid for the remainder of 2005 this will ensure you get the new card being issued at the end of the year. PPCLI Posted 1 April , 2005 Share Posted 1 April , 2005 Hi folks, My sister tried to get a couple of forms in Nottingham yesterday only to be told that there is a 'national shortage' of E111 forms in England! Don't know whether to or Supposedly, you are advised to download the PDF form at the Department of Health Web site (dh.gov.uk). Stuart

John_Hartley Posted 1 April , 2005 Share Posted 1 April , 2005 The only problem with the download is that it doesnt include the form that you need to fill in to get the cards sent to you later in the year (unless I missed it, of course) Still, my local post post office had stacks of them. burlington Posted 1 April , 2005 Share Posted 1 April , 2005 John There is a tick box on the application form itself. My only complaint, having just filled mine in, is that the little boxes for each letter of your name etc are so SMALL! Martin

DirtyDick Posted 2 April , 2005 Share Posted 2 April , 2005 Are they still absolutely necessary? I assume they help immeasurably with re-imbursement of typical medical expenses, but I thought that nowadays all EU citizens were entitled to free, no-hassle emergency treatment in any EU country - enought to save life and see them home safely - and that this would be paid for automatically, in the case of a British citizen by the NHS? I believe the UK has similar reciprocal agreements with Australia and Canada. The wonders of 'Socialist' medecine, methinks. Ricardo

Yes, Australia and UK have a reciprocal agreement but if one stopss off on the way over there one needs insurance unfortunately. I got my new E111 after Chris alerted us. No rush on them down here in Dover, however. Roberto
Guest Indy Posted 2 April , 2005 Share Posted 2 April , 2005 The E111 is really necessary and very useful!I had an accident while abroad and get all ok thanks to that. Now in Italy we have substituted that paper form with a sanitary card (has the form of a credit card)which is valide in Italy and all EU countries. It's smaller and more useful! Brings to mind childhood memories of the "sanitary" truck that graced the streets and lanes of suburban Sydney in the 50s. Roberto

healdav Posted 2 April , 2005 Share Posted 2 April , 2005 The E111 - 2004 style has been replaced by a new E111. The main difference is that the old one was on a family basis whereas the new one is individual. So you need one for each member of the family. This is becasue there are an awful lot of people where members of families work in different countries and thus the country giving treatment has to claim reimbursement from different countries. It also means that say, a husband who works in France and goes to Belgium with his wife (who works in Belgium), can go to a doctor in Belgium with his E111 and his wife can go to one in France with her E111. This may sound arcane to the British, but believe me, over here the complexities of family life have to be experienced to be believed. This website gives details of what to do and there are probably others. http://www.rac.co.uk/travelservices/e111
