SaracenSix Posted 30 October , 2022 Share Posted 30 October , 2022 Hi, Could anyone help me in identifying any information on this German soldiers headstone please. Thank you
charlie2 Posted 30 October , 2022 Share Posted 30 October , 2022 Josef Kandziora from Gleiwitz, 1. Eskadron Reserve Ulanen Regiment 4. Died of GSW to head and left thigh at a CCS. http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/9487495 There isn‘t a Max Drilling recorded in the casualty lists but he is recorded in the RC records https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/5075649/1/2/ I suspect his correct name was Franz http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/3065327 He died of GSW wounds to his neck, leg and chest also at a CCS https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Zoom/D/05/01/C_G1_D_05_01_0154/C_G1_D_05_01_0154_0080.JPG/4 Charlie

AOK4 Posted 31 October , 2022 Share Posted 31 October , 2022 (edited) There's plenty of incorrect/incomplete German names at Duhallow ADS Cemetery. Unfortunately, I can't find any more information online about the fallen of Niedermarsberg (Drilling). A lot of the German casualties were taken prisoner in my area (Wevelgem - Bissegem - Gullegem - Moorsele etc) mid October 1918. If I ever would have too much time, it would be interesting to make an overview of how these Germans ended up there by showing where they were probably taken prisoner. I'm quite sure quite a few names could be corrected as well. Edited 31 October , 2022 by AOK4
AOK4 Posted 31 October , 2022 Share Posted 31 October , 2022 Perhaps also one of the two memorials to the fallen in Niedermarsberg could give some more details.
charlie2 Posted 31 October , 2022 Share Posted 31 October , 2022 My assumption that Franz was the correct Drilling is incorrect. There are only two Drilling in the casualty lists with an entry dated after 31.10.1918 - Franz, IR 113 and Josef IR 53 neither of them can be correct as they were both captured in the Ardennes or on the Aisne. The CWGC GRs for Drilling are very confusing https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/6001565/max-drilling/, he is recorded as being in „2/Bayer Regt“, there is no one in the Bavarian Stammrollen with the name Drilling. It would seem as though the name is completely wrong. Charlie

I'll try to find out more if I can find a bit of time. He should probably be from the 1st Bavarian Reserve Division (BRIR 1, 2 and 3) if that would help you, charlie2.
