Can't find this chap at CWGC.

= Anyone submitted or looking at a potential non-comm for him? [I am currently waiting on CWGC to advise of any past enquiries]

I have:

his two Admiralty Seaman's records from TNA - last posting: Attentive III (Highlander)

his four disability and dependants' pension cards from WFA/Fold3

his Death Registration from GRO [not yet got, but thinking if it is worth buying, his DC??]

  • DoB: 27 March 1895
  • Enlisted: 13 August 1914
  • Discharged: 30 May 1917 - Discharged Shore, Invalided Tuberculosis [SR]
  • DoD: 20 February 1918 - Tuberculosis Adentitis [Pensions]

= Can anyone assist with more records/details etc. please.

I expect you would need a DC to verify the cause of death. Not a current IFCP case.

Many thanks Paul,

Please ... What is the title of this Register? [Whilst I have opened I'm unsure of its title].

I'm putting off spending my hard cash on a DC for a while - pending this preparatory evidence trawl and an enquiry of CWGC.

Thanks for identifying not current IFCP.

Not sure to be honest, it's just lumped in with the pension cards. David Tattersfield might know.

OK I'll ask him = @David Tattersfield Can you please help - what is the register recently posted above https://www.fold3.com/image/643063847?xid=1022 actually called?

Also I'll also chance my arm with pensions maestro @ss002d6252 - can you please help with a name/purpose for that register?

I don't think I've ever come across a specific name for it.

I think it was just meant as a quick reference list, where a quick summary of the case was noted.

I've not particularly looked at the naval cases before, but it's interesting that the 'case numbering' must have been added after the fact as they are numbered pretty much in alphabetical order (and I'm pretty sure they didn't claim in such a nice, ordered, fashion). I have a feeling that they created a central registry with their own numbers rather than just using a reference to the standard MoP numbering - something for another day, perhaps.

Ah well - Waiting on David now - once upon a time they were nice leather-bound ledger(s) [you can occasionally see the covers scanned - now a bit worn] but I've not seen a name for the register/ledgers.

Edit: having writen the above I think they appear to be indexed at WFA/Fold3 [using the 'Browse' function] as: Naval Pension Ledgers and then more specifically as: Awards to Dependants Other Than Widows and Children of Seamen https://www.fold3.com/browse/h-gceWkCTy_XcJp9yt__daC0h [then listed by the first name on each page - all the other names on the pages are there but not indexed, so a challenge to search more directly] - but still the original military name of the ledger has eluded me.

There's a summary of the Naval Ledgers on the WFA's website here >>> Release of Naval and Mercantile Marine Pension Records by Ancestry

This is a summary of a paper I wrote in 2015, a copy of which is attached to this post. Hope this helps.

Thank you.

So for SCOTT and the others this page https://www.fold3.com/image/643063847?xid=1022 is from the Binder/Register called Awards to Dependants Other Than Widows and Children of Seamen

[Got to get my nomenclature right when presenting as a potential Non-comm to CWGC and the Navy!]
