The memorial in the garden at the Ariane Hotel to Elsie Knocker and Mairie Chisholm and their dog, 'Shot'. Elsie and Mairie set up medical facilities in Pervyse in support of the Belgian Army. Remarkable women who are Not Forgotten.

Best regards.

Stephen (Maldon).

Many years ago (long before the Ariane statue) , I obtained Elsie Knockers book, signed by her.  It is no longer in my WW1 library but an interested party now enjoys it.

I read "Elsie and Mairie go to War" and I don't think they were  nurses or VADs (the statue appears to show them in nursing uniform) but civilians- Mairie was given an "honoury" RAF uniform to prevent  her being stopped by sentries if I remember rightly (I don't have the book anymore). Nonetheless they did good work in transporting wounded in their privately owned  ambulance.

I do not think they were nurses either, although there are photographs of them both in a type of nurse uniform.  As far as I recall they were both motorcycle enthusiasts befire the war.  I also have the book somewhere but there are so many books I will probably never find it.
