seaJane Posted 14 October , 2022 Share Posted 14 October , 2022 (edited) Listening, as I type, to Hubert Parry's Chivalry of the Sea, written in memory of the dead of the Battle of Jutland; I must look it up later and find out who wrote the words. At the later end of this programme: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001cnxm Edited 14 October , 2022 by seaJane
ilkley remembers Posted 16 October , 2022 Share Posted 16 October , 2022 Librettist was Robert Bridges who wrote it in memory of Charles Dennis Fisher who went down with the Invincible at Jutland. Fisher was from the from a rather well connected family whose siblings include HAL Fisher and William Wordsworth Fisher who commanded the St Vincent at Jutland. He was also variously related through his mother to Ralph Vaughan Williams and Virginia Woolf . Glorious piece of music, in the Parry style of course, and certainly suits the verse by Bridges http://firstworldwar.westminster.org.uk/?tag=chivalry-of-the-sea
