Stebie9173 Posted 29 March , 2005 Share Posted 29 March , 2005 Having found the site and articles on the renumbering of the Territorial Force Service Numbers, is it wise to give advice based on the numbering system found there? http://www.tf.1914-1918.net/TF_renumbering_index.htm For example, Northumberland Fusiliers number 204000 would put him in the 4th Battalion NF, and Devonshire Regiment 203000 would put a soldier in the 4th Battalion Devonshire TF. I realise that there are exceptions, but I would like to at least let people have a starting point for their enquiries. I would not want to lead people astray, but if the numbers are reliable, as they seem to be, the seem too good a resource to waste... Thanks for any reply, Steve. Chris_Baker Posted 29 March , 2005 Share Posted 29 March , 2005 They are very reliable - unless I've made any typos, that is...

Charles Fair Posted 29 March , 2005 Share Posted 29 March , 2005 For example, Northumberland Fusiliers number 204000 would put him in the 4th Battalion NF, and Devonshire Regiment 203000 would put a soldier in the 4th Battalion Devonshire TF. I realise that there are exceptions, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The best you can say is ... probably ... but there were many exceptions. For example your NF man may have originally served in the 1/4th (with a 4 digit number), then ended up in England wounded. On recovery he might have been sent back to depot where he would have been allocated a number in the 4th NF number block. He might then have been posted to an Infantry Base Depot in France, but instead of going to the 1/4th was posted to the 1/5th. It can be a good starting point but you must cross check against the medal roll (not just the MIC) and service records if these survive.
