This soldier is listed in SDGW as being born Rochdale, but I cannot find any reference to this location regarding him anywhere , is SDGW infallible ? bewildered of Milnrow, Rochdale. Ralph

The Stamford Hague I can find on FMP lived long time and married in York in 1915. Died in 1916. No newspaper articles obvious. Born 1878 in Manchester, maybe had relatives in Rochdale?

Thanks chaps. All the above I have tracked and checked Rochdale appears nowhere.  Maybe the Rochdale Road reference has something to do with it. I must have passed this address a million times to and from work over the years.  Ah well such is life.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the 'Rochdale Road' mentioned in 1881 is now known as 'Bury and Rochdale Old Road' (B6222) which goes through the CE Parish of St Michael (past St Michael's CE Primary School, nr. Bamford).  At this time all of these (then) small towns were grouped as "near" Manchester.  I'm forever sifting through "Rawtenstall, Manchester" entries, and that particular small town is some twenty miles from Manchester, so it did happen.

I'll have a look at a period map when I get the chance.

There is another (still standing) 91 Rochdale Road actually in Manchester (nr. Middleton) but I can't make any St Michael's connection there.
