Remembered Today:

‘AUSTRALIA’ on cap?

Hello!

I found an interesting photo of this First war digger,

66944BF1-3D5F-497E-81EE-DD16E21D7980.jpeg.912cff3c32914e69b233bcb33829dd7f.jpeg

he’s sporting the shoulder ‘AUSTRALIA’ on his cap badge and some badge resembling the shape of Australia above it.

Is this common? It’s really rare to see this I believe,

Yes I’ve seen that before, but I don’t think it was widespread throughout a unit, just an individual act of idiosyncrasy.  He has used a collar badge, surmounting a shoulder title, in lieu of a full size cap badge.

That makes sense,
Thanks as ever Frogsmile!

That’s actually underneath a full size cap badge and not something I’ve seen before.  The forage caps became quite unpopular, apparently, and as the silhouette looked very British, I suspect that the soldier concerned wanted to make sure that there was no doubt about where he came from.

Not sure about this, he seems to have a badge in the shape of a map of Australia above the title, certainly not the rising sun collar badge

Thanks Jerry.  Looking on my phone screen I had thought it was the larger (cap type) rising sun badge.

It takes a very odd shape, almost as if a spiky plant head.

The Rising Sun badge for the General Service Cap AIF was the same size as the Collar dog, not the full size Rising Sun for the slouch hat, as referenced by my grandfathers two hats.

That makes sense Jeff, as the larger slouch hat badge would have looked disproportionate, which is partly why that is what I thought I could see on the photo concerned above.  What do you think the odd looking badge is?  It’s a strangely spiky looking thing sat above a shoulder title.

Incidentally, I stumbled upon this image where an Australian soldier is clearly wearing the larger pattern rising sun badge on his forage cap.  It is a lot clearer and at first glance has that similar spiky appearance.

Interesting.. maybe the stores ran out of the smaller Rising sun, but thanks for all this! It's really helpful.

It’s a pristine looking cap so perhaps the badge was taken for use pro tem from a battered and worn out slouch hat.
